In a world of rising costs and small print it's never been more important for your business to manage it's budget effectively. Choosing a service to use to find your next developer/project is part of that budget and so it's important to know what you are getting into before hand.
We did some research, collecting data from 7 of the most popular traditional marketplaces and this is what we found. It is important to note here that some of these marketplaces are generic and not developer/Magento specific.
The majority of services offer free accounts for both clients and freelancers but that's basically where the all the free offers end. As we have said before these sites are geared towards enticing clients, the idea being that if all the fish are in one pond then all the fishermen will come to that pond and not any other, which in fairness is a good strategy, the issue comes in HOW they entice clients.
There is the apparent offer of free tools for the client to use, things like free payments to freelancers, free tracking of project progress, tools to communicate with and to update freelancers on goals or extra tasks and all contained within the service for them to use however it's usually the freelancer that ends up with the bill for these tools.
The reality is that in business you have to make money otherwise you won't last long and so for a service to need to make money is fine, Developer Connection needs to make money, it's not a free service, no service is and we accept that, but the deceptiveness of it is what we dislike.
As the freelancer is working and getting paid the service will take a cut of the money earned and so either the freelancer takes a pay cut or they pass on the X% of the service cut to the client by invoicing more than they normally would, in turn making the client pay for those free tools they were offered. Now obviously the service's cut doesn't solely go on the free tools, it will be divided between running costs, staff, general expenses, the usual business stuff but indirectly the cut will part fund them.
It will also be difficult for freelancers working on smaller, lower paying jobs to make a good amount of money as most sites will charge more of a cut the less you make, newer freelancers would find it very difficult to thrive in this kind of environment.
Please bare in mind that this is a typical example of what happens and not how each site works specifically. Some sites for example will charge the client the extra and not the freelancer in an attempt to get clients to fish from the freelancer pond rather than the other way around.
In our research we saw that some sites will charge from about 9% extra, depending on the cost of the project, and some will charge a staggering 20% extra, again, depending on the project. All of these figures are obviously available on their respective sites but they are not front and centre, in fact on one site we had to search through 5 pages of information to find these figures.
So what about Developer Connection? How is it different from all these other services and what will it really cost to use it?
Here at Hussey Coding we believe in honesty and transparency and so there is no small print or hidden fee involved, what you clearly see at each step of the process is what you pay, nothing more.
For clients it's a free sign up, you will then be able to use our questionnaire to help you create a project which base minimum is £50. Projects require a one off payment to post and that's it! Create, pay, post, done. You will have the option to purchase more connections after the project is created if you want to but that will also be clearly priced.
How much a project will cost to post will all depend on the options you chose, for example choosing a single developer for your project is free, hiring a team of say 20 developers will cost more however the total cost will be calculated for you before you click to create a project and as we said above it's a one off payment. Then all you need to do is sit back and wait while the service automatically matches you with the amount of developers you asked to be matched with, pick a developer and your project is underway. Obviously this does not include the developers fee, we are here to connect you only.
Once you have subscribed and set up your profile you can be automatically matched to an unlimited amount of client projects based on your profile, you won't need to be writing new proposals over and over with Developer Connection as your profile is your proposal so it's very important to spend some time developing and perfecting it.
After connecting with a client and agreeing to work together, you are free to work independently of Developer Connection, you can communicate how you like, work how you like, track how you like and not have to conform to the rigidity of a big brother style freelancer site. And in case you missed it whatever you earn from a project you get to keep 100% of it! We take a 0% cut from your work, nothing, nada, zip, it's all yours!
